Students on their first semester in all departments, Directing and Producing, Creative Technology, Screenwriting and Directing, took part in SAM, a cooperation week where they work for other students in shooting and preparing their short films.

Third semester students of Directing and Producing finished a directing course under the guidance of Gunnar B. Gunnarsson (Gauragangur, Astropia), where they practiced the directors approach to scenes with the emphasis on the interplay between acting and camera work, and then began their filming period where each of them will be shooting their own short film, guided by Gunnar B.

Second semester students of Creative Technology also had a cooperation week, a SAM week. Third semester students finished editing their documentaries that they will be showing at the end of the semester. With them was the head of editing, David Alexander Corno (Undir halastjornu, Woman at war).

Third semester of Screenwriting and Directing, along with Directing and Producing, finished a directing course and began a filming period where each of them will produce their own short film.

Second semester students of Acting began work on a play that they will premiere at the end of the semester, directed by Runar Gudbrandsson (Svartur a leik, XL). Third semester students sat a course in acting and voicing with Thorunn Erna Clausen (Loi), where they continued work on a musical they will be showing at the end of the semester, as well as doing a course in acting in front of a camera, where they prepared scenes that were directed by professional directors.

Kinema, the Film Schools student organisation, offered a Script Workshop on Tuesday and Karaoke, and ended the week with a Beer evening on Friday.

For the last 10 years Bio Paradis has had a special place for both students and staff of The Icelandic Film School. Every Friday our students have flocked there for film history, and to watch carefully chosen films that have completely changed the genre of film making.

Our students have had the opportunity to watch these films in the highest possible quality in a film theater. These classes are of course a basic necessity in the education of Icelandic film makers.

At the end of each semester we celebrate our “harvest” in Bio Paradis. For a whole week our students show the fruit of their efforts on the same screen where they watched the masterpieces. At the end of the week of premieres our students graduate from the school in a festive ceremony, and of course in a film theater. 


We challenge both the government and the city to find a workable solution to this problem and save Bio Paradis.

This cultural home of films is simply to important to vanish from our society.

The Icelandic Film School is looking for graduated students that are interested to take part in the “Talent Village 2019” of the Les Arcs film festival.  
All together 8 students from film schools around the world will partake in the workshop at the film school in Lyon, as well as introducing their full length project to producers in the festivals Co-production Village. The festival itself will pay for flights and upkeep of those chosen.

The Film School will send 3-4 applications from graduated students to the festival, that the festival committee will then choose from. The deadline for applications to the school is the 1st of May, and you can apply to our Head of Studies, Hrafnkell Stefansson, through his email; hrafnkell@kvikmyndaskoli.is


We ask our graduates that have a full length project in development (3-5 page synop minimum) to apply and we will then choose the best 3-4 projects to send to the committee.

Vivian Olafsdottir actress, a graduate of Acting from The Film School

The short film “Hard world”, was a joint graduation project between Þórður Pálsson from the Directing department and Egill Antonsson from Creative technology, who both graduated in the fall of 2011


Talking to Þórður, the films director, he told us

The two years that I studied at The Icelandic Film School were fantastic. It was there that I first realized what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. To write and direct films.
There I learned the basic needs of producing directed material, that is; how to work with actors, evolve ideas into a script and to speak with pictures, not only words. Individuals with the same passionate interest in film making can evolve together in a creative environment.
Not only did I learn practical applications at The Film School, but I also made friends there for life.
During my last semester at The Film School, I discovered that I wanted to learn even more and realized that my graduation film would be a sort of “calling card” for me. I therefor put a lot of effort into my graduation film “A hard world”, that I made with Egill Antonsson from Creative Technology.After graduation I applied at The National Film and Television School in England and got accepted. I graduated from there last summmer after two years of studying and now have an MA in Directin Fiction, an agent at an acclaimed agency and got a grant from Nordic Talents 2015 to write my first full length film.
I would not have gotten this far today, if I had not studied at The Icelandic Film School, that I know for sure.

Next year the television shows “The Valhalla Murders” will be shown on RÚV and directing and writing them is Þórður Pálsson.

We also got in touch with Egill Antonson from Creative Technology, and he told us

The Icelandic Film school connected me with good people and that gave me an opportunity for a lot of entertaining work as lighting director, both in Iceland as well as in Norway and Denmark. I have been working in that field for 5 years, until I took a new parental leave. I have been living in Greenland for the last six months, getting myself familiarized with both the country and population

Sjafnar Björgvinsson graduated from the Acting department with his film “Kafteinn Kambur og Tryggvi blaðamaður”. We got Sjafnar to share with us his experience

What got me to apply to The Film School was a kind of calling to utilize my talents in a different kind of studies. I had been studying at the university for a year and found out that academic and book studies was not made for me. The studies were basically difficult and I needed more movement in my course work. After a short period of contemplating I went for it and applied to The Film School. I simply had to get some kind of change into my studies and movement and other types of active courses were a perfect fit. The department I chose was without hesitation Acting, because I had some experience in the field. I had before at elementary school and college done some acting and it always seemed to suit me, more than other types of studying. Acting has been a precious hobby and why not get an in depth understanding of the field? Also when you have an interest in your studies it makes it so much easier to learn and the work becomes much more fun

When it comes to talking about my graduation film, in short I made a complicated short film. It is not simple because the plot is unusual for a short film, the script is more suited for a full length feature. The plot is that a news paper reporter needs a story to write and gets help from his cousin, a headhunter. His cousin drags him along on a treasure hunt for a valuable item and together they have to tackle criminals, life threatening situations and other obstacles in their way. The film has a lot of aspects as she draws inspiration from so many different themes and film elements. It is a hot pot of films like 50´s Noir, Gangster, Punk and Industrial Sci-Fi. Therefor the preparations had to be solid to pull this off. The script went through quite a few drafts to fit a short shooting time and all crew and staff was hired as quickly as possible. That was the original plan but everything from the script writing on wards seems to have been fraught with difficulties. There were problems getting actors and things always came together late. It seemed to work in the end when we had to start shooting. Obviously things will go wrong on the shoot site, but it was fixed as soon as possible so everything worked out. There were many locations to tackle but it all came together in the end despite all the difficulties we had making this short film. And despite everything that happened, I admit that I will continue in this avenue in the future

After graduation I will be exploring other assests of the business and continue to create my own works like music videos and other sound projects. I will also be developing my acting skills. It is hard work but like my graduation project showed, there will always be problems. There is no business like the entertainment business and it is wonderful how many things you can do within it and there is so much to remember from my time at the school. There were so many moments in school to enjoy, like putting on your own play in front of a room full of people and write your own musical and sing on stage in front of an audience. A special moment I would like to share is when I and my fellow students were together on the last day of school and we had a few hours left. We put on some music and started to dance. Just dance. We made our own musical in no time, I felt such happiness being in an ordinary class room and just be dancing for the love of the art form. Poetic description perhaps but that is theater to me. When we throw off the shackles and explore the creative form. It is beautiful.The Film School has become an important and memorable part of my life and I am very grateful to have been a participant during these years while I studied there

“Eden” by Snaevar Solvi Solvason will be shown in cinemas from May 10th

The Algerian-French film director Rachid Bouchareb visited this years Stockfish Film Festival in Iceland and stopped by at the Icelandic Film School to share his visions with teachers and students.

His latest film “Road to Istanbul“ was on the festival program having had it´s premiere only weeks before at the Berlinale.   Bouchareb´s films always provide widespread attention and often touch themes as cultural diversities and collations – in his latest film – complications in relations between the east and west.

Says Sigrún Gylfadóttir, project manager at Acting at Icelandic Film School. She adds that Bouchareb has already received two nominations for the Oscars as the best foreign film representing Algeria.

The director gave an interesting and generous Q & A for students about his career and film making. Asked about advice to young film makers he gave the answer:

If I can give you any advice it would be, first and last to follow your heart and find your true passion. Let that be your energetic aproach to your art.

Erna Huld Arnardóttir – A new journalist working for IFS New on Twitter

Ólöf Birna Torfadóttir´s graduation film, recently won the prize Best comedy/drama foreign short film at the 2016 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards .

Ólöf Birna graduated from – Screenwriting/directing  this spring and has been working mostly on writing for projects since her graduation.

The film is based on true events and displays in a surreal manner how people are confronted when afamily member is fighting a depression and tries to commit suicide

The prize is a great encouragement for Ólöf Birna for her upcoming projetcs.

I will continue work on my projects in the near future. I´m just finishing an application for a grant for from The Icelandic Film Center for the script of a new short film to be shot shortly before Christmas. In addition to that I am starting an extensive reasearch for a larger project later this winter.

A IFS graduate wins the prize Best comedy/drama foreign short film in LA for a 2016 graduation film

Stuck in Iceland is an extremely popular website for those interested in Iceland’s nature and everything else the country has to offer.

Our student Garðar Ólafsson was recently spotted by the web for his spectacular photos and videos shot around the country. Ólafsson’s interest began in photography some six years ago and he soon added shooting videos to his repertoire.  This led him to the Icelandic Film School where he is currently studying and one can without any doubt say the young man has found his path.

The French Film Festival in Reykjavík is running until February 4th

A young Canadian filmmaker, Ms. Gabrielle Demers, visited us on Tuesday January 30th for a “brown bag” lunch talk in Siggasalur. Demers is one of the 3 finalists this year of the Solveig Anspach price, which will be announced on February 1st at a ceremony at Háskólabíó

One of the highlights of Gabrielle’s short film is that the entire team involved was a female-team only. Her film “Paupiére Mauve – Iris” has won a price in a US Festival. We showed her short film before the discussion and the day was a great one for all involved
