Open call for 18th edition of Skjaldborg - Icelandic Documentary Film Festival Skjaldborg - Festival of Icelandic Documentaries will be held in Patreksfjörður from June 6th-9th 2025.
The early bird deadline is March 3rd 2025 and the regular deadline is March 24th 2025. For submissions please visit www.skjaldborg.is
It is possible to apply with a screener of films in post production state and a description of the state of the project and an estimated date of completion prior to the festival dates.
Skjaldborg premiers Icelandic documentaries with the aim to support the development of the Icelandic documentary scene. The two categories are Documentary Premiere and Work in Progress.
The Icelandic documentaries premiering at the festival compete for the coveted audience award Einarinn. Documentaries 40 minutes and longer compete for Ljóskastarinn, the feature film jury award, and short films (39 minutes and shorter) compete for Skjaldan, shortfilm jury award.
Eligible films for Skjaldborg need to fulfill the two following terms (1) & (2):
1. Documentaries that fulfill one of the following:
- Documentaries that count as Icelandic majority production
- The director is Icelandic or has permanent address in Iceland
- Documentaries in Icelandic language and/or documentaries that touch on Icelandic culture and subjects.
2. Documentaries which have not been screened publicly in Iceland and will not be screened before the completion of the Skjaldborg festival that year. Public screenings in Iceland include screenings in cinemas, at film festivals, on television, open websites or other media. Single school screenings held by schools to celebrate the products of film courses do not count as public screenings. Closed screenings for film crews do not count as public screenings. Films that have been publicly screened overseas are eligible.
Note! The festival also considers foreign documentary films with Icelandic co-production and those applications will be evaluated by the Skjaldborg board.
