Graduation Winter 2022 - Karim Birimumaso, Acting

Karim Birimumaso is graduating from Acting with his film “It was my dream”

His film is based on his true story and he believes that it will open the eyes of African people to the consequences of the “shusher” media and how they have been putting their own lives in danger.

What is the first acting experience you remember?

Ever since I was a small boy I have enjoyed watching films and from the age of 7 I was acting in local dramas set up at the town church.

What fascinates you about filmmaking?

Some people tell stories through writing a book, some by singing a song. I am telling stories by making movies and it fascinates me.

Why did you choose your department?

I come from Uganda and arrived in Iceland in 2010 with a dream of becoming an actor. In 2017 I ran into a friend who had just graduated from The Film School and introduced me to it, but I had not been here long enough to get student loans even though I am an Icelandic citizen, but no I am finally graduating.

Did anything particularly surprise you in the study?

I am surprised to realize the impact the study had on my ability to memorize the script and develop the character from scratch. Before I used to think my performances were good, but after the studies I realized how many skills I developed and I am so grateful for this opportunity.

And what does the future look like?

My future today is really bright and I can see even further, I can see my dream come true and I have the biggest dream. With my education to go back to Uganda and build an Academy so young Ugandan, talented actors can have a chance to show what God has given them. And I can see myself also adding to the Icelandic film industry and the world at large.
