Ari Róbertsson - Screenwriting and Directing

Ari will be graduating from Screenwriting and Directing with his film "Sjáaldur auga míns"

Sjáaldur auga míns

The film is a family story that spans a period in the lives of three generations. Aðalsteinn and Valdís are a young couple who are expecting a child and move into Aðalstein's childhood home. They are ready to face family life when the dark side of the past stirs up mixed emotions in Aðalsteinn, creating difficult challenges for him as a father-to-be. The film has a psychological undertone and shows how the past haunts Aðalsteinn and how it affects his and his son's life and his future will not be as he planned.

What is the first movie experience you remember?

I don't really remember my first movie experience, but I remember very well when I saw "Inception" in the cinema in 2010. That movie had a great impact on me and undoubtedly had something to do with my interest in filmmaking. Naturally, I was just a nine-year-old boy when I saw the film and I didn't understand what was going on, but it was just such a cool and crazy movie and I think that my interest in movies first arose then.

What fascinates you about filmmaking?

What fascinates me the most about filmmaking is being able to tell stories visually and communicate them in a way that the audience can interpret in different ways and in a personal way.

Why did you choose your department?

I'm interested in how stories are presented and how stories are told and from which point of view the story is told, and that's why I chose Screenwriting and Directing.

Did anything particularly surprise you in your studies?

I was pleasantly surprised by how much drive and cooperation there was in the study right from the start. I was also surprised by how much work goes into making one short film. There is a lot of learning in pouring yourself into the creation of your own work and that of fellow students, and it is fun to work with good people.

And what does the future look like?

It's just exciting and I have some exciting projects that I'm working on. And then it remains to be seen what opportunities await me in the future.
