Oli Hjortur was a student at The Film School and is now working on a documentary that anyone can support on Karolina Fund
We had a chat with him to delve a little deeper into this work in progress and of course had to start with what drew him to the world of film making
I was interested in film making really from my first memories. When I was between the ages of 6 and 12 I used to go by myself to the movies. I have always thought it was both cozy and nourishing to go to the cinema alone and then completely forget myself and get wrapped up in the movie. But the first film that took hold was “Beetlejuice” by Tim Burton. I was so completely enthralled by that film and continue to be enthralled.
When it came to studying film making I chose Directing and Producing because that felt like the best fit. I get great enjoyment from seeing a project be born and then become a reality. And I truly like working with creative people, be it actors or editors or cinematographers. This all enchants me.
The studies went very well and I got very good directions. I made great friends and sometimes still keep in touch and I really enjoy seeing wht the people I studied with are doing today. I was incredibly happy with the courses although there were a few hiccups, as in any studying but you just have to brush them off as in any educational field. I am slightly embarrassed that I still have one year left at the school. Circumstances unfortunately were such that I had to put the studies on hold but I completely intend on coming back and finishing. Hopefully that will happen after I finish this film. I annoys me to have this half finished and I really want that graduation cap.
The project Oli Hjortur is tackling is varied and he is taking on all the avenues of film making
The idea and the insoiration for the film came from Instagram from all places. I met my main character there as unbelievable as that might sound. He is an unknown artist that lives in Los Angeles and has, to put it lightly, seen more than his share through his life. I will be focusing on his art and his life’s story. I will also go through the process of making the film so I will be the second main character in the film. You can say it is a film within a film. The process is still in full development and I have started a fundraiser on the Karolina Fund website, where anyone can support the film. It has gone well, but very slow, perhaps because at the moment I am working it solo, being the director, producer and cinematographer. It is guerilla film making at its core. But I am determined to make this work and am stepping way outside my comfort zone, which is extremely important if you want to survive this business.
Showings will be next year in cinemas if everything goes according to plan, but the main focus now is on completely finishing the script and storyboard.
It is one great adventure and I would not want it any other way.
It is a pleasure to follow works like this in progress and we wish Oli Hjortur the best of luck in his en-devour. Here you can support the film on Karolina Fund :
